when you are in the class

I just staring at nisa, see her face with confusing, we have same condition, but I feel more confusing. One week later, this situation are the same, I think it will never end. Days to day, that silver who Eli bring to school is too much, there is necklace, a ring and bracelet. Eli always tell about her silver, but never tell us about the special of a silver
“I want to know” nisa ask us. “there are so many element that really special, why you choose silver, Eli? Eli not answering my question, but turning away. As same as I did not give to her any cheat when the exam.
I just shaking my head. After five minute the bell ring.
“close your homework book please?” Mr. bin star the lesson.
That is good voice, we are smiling and pay attention to Mr. Bin,.
“today we ganna study abou silver.” Mr. Bin reed the book, and explain the lesson.
“ who knows, what is silver?” Mr bin ask us
We just whispered each other, and shaking our head.
“do you know nisa?” Mr. Bin through to Nisa’s table
“aaa ammm” Nisa just glance to Eli “ I think silver is the same with Eli’s bracelet sir?”
All of the student are loughing, “ ok no problem Nisa, at least you know about silver, right?” Mr.Bin calm down the situation.
“Silver was discovered was discovered in Ancient times and used by the ancient South Americans, Asians, Egyptians, Greeks, Romans and Chinese. It is mentioned in the Bible. Silver is one of the metals referred to as one of the 'Metals of Antiquity', A lustrous white, ductile, malleable metallic element, occurring both uncombined and in ores such as argentite, having the highest thermal and electrical conductivity of the metals, but its greater cost has prevented it from being widely used for electrical purposes. Silver is one of the scarcest elements. Most silver used today is obtained from its ores, including argentite. The leading producers are Mexico, USA, Russia, Australia and Canada. Silver is prepared in various ways depending upon the nature of its occurrence but especially in connection with the refining of lead and copper. It is highly valued for jewelry, tableware, and other ornamental use and is used in coinage, photography, dental and soldering alloys, electrical contacts, and printed circuits. The Atomic Number of this element is 47 and the Element Symbol is Ag.”

Mr. Bin staring our face, one by one. “ in here, who knows, what is the function of silver?”
“ for jewelry sir, it must be very beautiful” with louder voice Eli answer the question.
Eli showed off her silver. Mr. Bin nodded, “ you are right Eli, but ther are so many the function of perak, not only for jewelry”

“Uses of Silver in Electronics, Uses of Silver in Energy, Uses of Silver in Brazing and Soldering, Uses of Silver in Chemical Production,Uses of Silver in Coins and Investments, Uses of Silver in Photography, Uses of Silver in Medicine, Uses of Silver in Mirrors and Glass, Uses of Silver in Engines, Uses of Silver in Awards, Uses of Silver for Water, Food, Hygiene”

All of the student looked Mr. Bin without blinking. Very enthusiastic with the explanation about siver.
With my curiosity I ask Mr.bin “ what is the special of perak sir?”
Silver is a precious metal because it is rare and valuable, and it is a noble metal because it resists corrosion and oxidation, though not as well as gold. Because it is the best thermal and electrical conductor of all the metals, silver is ideal for electrical applications. Its antimicrobial, non-toxic qualities make it useful in medicine and consumer products. Its high luster and reflectivity make it perfect for jewelry, silverware, and mirrors. Its malleability, which allows it to be flattened into sheets, and ductility, which allows it to be drawn into thin, flexible wire, make it the best choice for numerous industrial applications. Meanwhile, its photosensitivity has given it a place in film photography”
We continue to resume our material. “sir how we can determine something is a silver sir?” juna rise his hand.
For determine is “
Test with a magnet. In particular, use a strong magnet, such as the rare-earth magnet made out of neodymium. Silver is paramagnetic and exhibits only weak magnetic effects. If your magnet sticks strongly to the piece, it has a ferromagnetic core and is not silver.  Keep in mind that there are a few other metals that do not stick to a magnet and can be made to look like silver. It is better to perform the magnetic test in conjunction with another test to make sure the core is not another metal.
Try the sliding test. If you are testing silver bars, there is another way you can use a magnet to see if your silver is real or not. Angle one of your silver bars so that it is at a 45 degree angle. Slide the magnet down it. The magnet should slide slowly down the face of the bar. This may seem counterintuitive, but silver is paramagnetic and the rare earth magnet induces electric eddy currents in the silver which act as an electromagnet to create a braking effect that slows the descent of the magnet
Have some ice on hand. Keep it in the freezer until you need it for the test. While it might not seem like ice and silver go together, silver has the highest thermal conductivity of any common metal or alloy, though copper is right behind. This test works well with coins and bars but will be harder to perform on silver jewelry
Place your piece of ice directly on the silver. Do not take your eyes off of it. The ice will begin to melt immediately, as if it has been placed on something hot, rather than as if it it was placed on something that was just room temperature
“You did not take note abi” juna reminded Abi. “ of course I am writing the material Junaldi, it will be a big  business.
“what is that?” I am disturbing abi’s imagination.
“ I ganna looking for silver and make it a beautiful jewelry for my mom”.
The class becomes crowded with laughter .

  1. Hi anissa,
    I want to ask
Why is silver called the ancient metal?

    1. because Silver has a special place in the history of the elements because it is one of the first five metals discovered and used by humans

  2. What is the function of silver in medicine?

    1. Silver ions act as a catalyst by absorbing oxygen, which kills bacteria by interfering with their respiration. This antibiotic property, along with its non-toxicity, has given silver an essential role in medicine for thousands of years. Before widespread use of antibiotics, silver foil was wrapped around wounds to help them heal, and colloidal silver and silver-protein complexes were ingested or applied topically to fight illness. Silver has also been used in eye drops and in dental hygiene to cure and prevent infection.

  3. Is there any other way that you can use as a scientific approach, apart from the way you have described it?

  4. Why silver and gold are priced more expensive than other metals?

    1. When gold meets with water and oxygen, its electrons are very difficult to loose so that rust is difficult to form. If the younger siblings leave this gold, water, and oxygen for a very long time, surely one day there will be a gold electron released and reacted, but there are so few, so that the brothers feel there is no rust covering a gold ring.

Then, what kind of metals are the electrons loose so they can react with water and oxygen? What to guess? Do not worry. Alessandro Volta (18th century Italian scientist) has compiled metals into a series, known as the Volta series. The metal on the left easily removes the electrons making it rusty easily, while the metal on the right tends to be difficult to rust.

      Volta series: Li-K-Ba-S-Ca-Na-Mg-Al-Mn-Zn-Cr-Fe-Cd-Co-Ni-Sn-Pb-H-Sb-Bi-Cu-Hg-Ag-Pt -Au

  6. give me an example of Uses of Silver in Electronics

    BalasHapus

    1. Almost all electronics are configured with silver. From turning out the lights to turning on your television, if it has an on/off button, it’s likely that silver is playing an important role, behind the scenes

  7. What is the use of antimicrobials?

    BalasHapus
    Balasan
    1. Antimicrobials are products that kill microorganisms or keep them from multiplying (reproducing) or growing. They are most commonly used to prevent or treat disease and infections due to microorganisms.
